TGUs with canned goods
All good on the workout front since the last post, sticking to plan (mostly). I taught combat Monday night, but swapped Tuesday's planned combat technique session for some extra jam. I am loving teaching jam, but it is so much harder to learn than combat - not helped by each release having completely different moves and styles of dance, so every time I am learning a new block of choreography I have to watch the "dance school" tips on the dvd and break it all down, video myself, and practice some more. Plus the actual choreography is much more complex than combat. Anyway, I digress.
Today's plan was kettlebells and a run and I really didn't feel like doing either as I was pretty drained today thanks to a lousy night's sleep last night. However, the GSR is looming so I dragged myself out for a 5 mile run. Well, jog, to be strictly accurate: I am not what you would call speedy. That done, I was all set to collapse in small heap and eat lunch, but Dave rightly pointed out to me that if I didn't do my kettlebells now I would not end up doing them later. Oh, how I hate it when he's right :-) So I copied him and did the devilish 666 workout: 6 swings, 6 cleans, 6 snatches each side, repeat 6 times. I started off with a 10kg for everything but had to drop down to an 8 for the last 3 sets of snatches. They feel a little too easy now with the 8 to be honest, but soooo hard with the 10! What is that all about?! With the 10 being a competition bell it is much bigger, so one problem is that if I don't stay strong and punch through the bell at the top to lock out the elbow I end up almost hitting myself in the back of the head. Not good.
After the 666 Dave suggested I finish off with some windmills and TGUs. I did 6 windmills on each side with the 6kg, which I was happy with as I've never really done these before. Then onto TGUs. I'm still working on my technique for these and am not up to doing them with a kettlebell yet. I keep meaning to, ahem, borrow a 3 kg dumbbell from the gym to use as a stepping stone. Anyway for today I decided to use a tin, just to get used to holding *something* while doing the TGU, and the first thing to hand was a tin of lobster bisque. I wonder if anyone has ever done TGUs with lobster before?! (Please note, we are not usually the sort of people who would possess a tin of lobster bisque. It was part of our tin wedding anniversary present from my mum!). Those were successful, so Dave suggested balancing something on my fist and getting up with that. For this we used a tin of Assam tea (again, from my mum!) on the grounds that it was light enough not to do me any damage when it inevitably fell off onto my head. But, actually, it didn't! It stayed in place for a TGU on each side. I was pretty pleased with myself!
Glad to have got my workouts out of the way now; when Dave goes to the gym tonight I shall be able to put my feet up with a glass of wine and watch Dollhouse :-)

Hi Beth! Is the Body Jam you teach the LesMills kind? I've never heard of this type of workout (atleast not in my corner of Canada :) )
I too, have yet to try a TGU with weights, to be honest I'm having a hard enough time balancing a shoe on my fist! :) That 666 workout sounds intense!

Very cool and fun and burns a heap of calories too! I teach bodycombat as well which is a nice contrast :-)
I tried balancing a shoe and couldn't - the tin was easier as flat!

Wow- yup, I'd say those were two sides of a coin! :) You must be VERY coordinated! The Bodycombat sounds more up my alley, I do kickboxing when I am not too lazy to drive out there. LOL
I may have to try SMALL tins of food like you, will let you know regarding impending welts on my head.
I'll have
